What is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is a state registration procedure for MSMEs introduced on July 1, 2020, by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises. It replaces the previous registration procedure called Udyog Aadhaar. The registration process is entirely online and  requires minimal documentation.

The primary purpose of Udyam Registration is to create a comprehensive database of MSMEs, enabling the government to formulate effective policies and schemes for their growth and development. It also helps MSMEs access various benefits and incentives offered by the government, such as priority sector lending, subsidies, tax benefits, and participation in government tenders.

Key features of Udyam Registration:

  • Online and Paperless: The entire registration process is conducted online through the Udyam Registration portal. No physical documents are required.
  • Self-Declaration: Businesses can self-declare their information, eliminating the need for extensive documentation.
  • Based on Turnover and Investment: The classification of MSMEs is based on their annual turnover and investment in plant and machinery or equipment.
  • Permanent Registration: Once registered, the Udyam Registration is valid for a lifetime, with no renewal required.
  • PAN and GSTIN Integration: The registration process is integrated with the Income Tax and GST systems, streamlining data verification.

Registering under Udyam is free and voluntary, but it’s highly recommended for MSMEs to avail themselves of the various government benefits and establish their credibility.

Who can register with Udyam?

Udyam registration is open to all types of businesses that fall under the MSME category, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited liability companies (LLPs),  limited liability companies, and others. The MSME classification is based on the company’s investment and revenue, which determines its eligibility for Udyam registration. The classification was revised by the government in July 2020 and now includes a composite criterion of investments and turnover from companies, making it more comprehensive.

According to the revised classification, the definition of MSMEs is as follows:

  • Small Business: Businesses with investments up to Rs. 10 crore and turnover up to Rs. 50 crores.
